Thursday, June 18: Meet up in Dublin. Free day with loads of options. (See Dublin handout.) Check in to Wynn’s Hotel, Dublin’s historic gem and the site where the 1916 rebels met to plan the Easter Rising against British rule: https://www.wynnshotel.ie

 

Friday, June 19: Day trip north into County Meath. Guided tour of Newgrange, a passage grave in the Boyne River Valley, built around 3,100 BC during the Neolithic Period, making it older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids.  Enjoy a casual lunch in Navan, followed by a guided tour of 11th century Trim Castle where “Braveheart” was filmed. Meander about the Hill of Tara, the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland. Return to Dublin to sleep at Wynn’s Hotel.

 

Saturday, June 20: Check out of Wynn’s to drive across the country to Galway City via Clonmacnoise, a 6th c. monastic site on the River Shannon in County Offaly. Stop in Athlone, County Roscommon for lunch and swing by Sean’s Bar, Ireland’s oldest (dating to 900 AD). Check in to Park House Hotel in Galway City. Free evening in Galway City to enjoy Ireland’s most vibrant centre of traditional music. Wander the cobbled streets and take note of the 13th century city walls. https://www.parkhousehotel.ie/

 

Sunday, June 21: Day trip to Connemara National Park, the picturesque western outcropping of County Galway, graced with mountains, lakes, rivers, and bogs. Stroll around the grounds of Kylemore Abbey, built in 1868 as a private home/castle and now home to a Benedictine community of nuns in a stunning setting with exquisite walled gardens. Swing by Killary Fjord, extending 10 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, for spectacular photo ops. Enjoy an evening of traditional music and dance at Trad on the Prom, Ireland’s #1 music, song, and dance extravaganza in Salthill on Galway Bay. Sleep at Park House Hotel.

 

Monday, June 22: Hop on the coach to the port at Rossaveal in Connemara to take a 45-minute ferry ride to Inis Mor, the largest of the three Aran Islands. On the island, enjoy a  coach tour of the island ending at Dun Aengus, a prehistoric fort dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages on the edge of a 325+ foot cliff with dramatic Atlantic waves crashing at its base. Return to Galway City. Sleep at Park House Hotel.

 

Tuesday, June 23: Check out of the Park House Hotel and leave Galway City for County Clare via Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara for a photo op and Hazel Mountain Chocolate Factory to enjoy delicious chocolates in every form imaginable. Marvel at the skill and intelligence of border collies at the Caherconnell Sheepdog demonstration where we will enjoy lunch in their café and visit the Poulnabrone Dolmen in the heart of the Burren, a single passage grave dating to the early Neolithic period, about 3800 BC. From there, we visit the iconic Cliffs of Moher, the most photographed site in all of Ireland. Finish the day with a multi-course medieval dinner while being serenaded by the talented musicians and singers at the Bunratty Castle Banquet. Wednesday, June 24: Check out of The Old Ground Hotel and leave Ennis for the Kingdom of Kerry. En route, stop in Adare, County Limerick, for lunch and a stroll through the village known for its charming thatched cottages. Sleep at Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee. https://www.meadowlandshotel.com/

 

Thursday, June 25: Day trip to Dingle Peninsula. Hold a baby lamb! Explore early medieval beehive huts! Swim at Inch Beach! Breathe in the fresh sea air on Slea Head Drive, the gorgeous winding road at the tip of the peninsula. Poke about the shops in Dingle town and enjoy the fresh seafood and Murphy’s delicious ice cream. Return to Tralee for an evening of traditional music. Sleep at Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee. 

 

Friday, June 26: Check out of Meadowlands Hotel and leave Tralee via Killarney, one of Ireland’s most famous towns, for a bite to eat and loads of options for shopping. Weather permitting, take a jaunting cart through Killarney National Park. Leave Killarney for County Tipperary and a tour of Rock of Cashel, the early medieval seat of the Kings of Munster and the site of Brian Boru’s crowning in 977, prior to his becoming the High King of a united Ireland from 1102 to 1014. In 1101, the king of Munster donated the site to the church and thereafter it became an important ecclesiastical centre. Leave Cashel for County Kilkenny. Sleep in Kilkenny at the stunningly beautiful Lyrath Estate. Enjoy the extensive grounds and, if you’re lucky, their two golden retriever dogs!  https://www.lyrath.com/

 

Saturday, June 27: Check out of Lyrath and leave Kilkenny for County Wicklow and Glendalough, 6th century monastic site nestled in in Wicklow Mountains. Stop for lunch at Powerscourt Estate. Last stop: Dublin Airport. Check in to Clayton Hotel.
